The History of Ear Candling

Ear candling has been considered a therapeutic, healing method used for thousands of years.

Ancient Egyptians used not only papyrus rolled into a cone shape but clay, cone-shaped pottery with double-helix cuts in the clay to guide the smoke down in a spiral. American Indians used reeds from the riverbank and cornhusks dipped in wax for candling purposes to relieve head congestion. In ancient times, upper-class Greeks used candling to evoke mental clarity. There's also evidence of candling in cave drawings discovered in Europe.

For hundred of years, doctors in Thailand, China, India, and the Philippines have routinely included the process as part of their regular practice of medicine. Diaries translated from native dialects of African slaves indicate that the practice of candling was widely used on the African continent. The Mesoamerican cultures of the Maya and Aztec are also known for using ear coning for therapeutic and ritual purposes. Even today, in much of Europe, candling is considered a mainstream form of home remedy.

Over the course of time, ear candles of been made from a wide variety of materials from clay or pottery to reads, leaves, papyrus, even rolled up newspapers. Today, most candles are made from a strip of material wrapped into a cone or tube shape (usually with a tapered end) and dipped in wax (usually food-grade paraffin or a blend of beeswax and another wax--paraffin or soy, etc.). Some companies put herbal additives in their wax. The different materials, waxes and additives will affect how the candle burns and how effective it is. Our candles are only made with unbleached cotton muslin and food-grade paraffin wax.
